एक कथा के अनुसार भगवान गणेशजी अपनी बुआ से रक्षासूत्र बंधवा रहे थे। इसके बाद उपहार का लेन-देन देखने के बाद गणेशजी के पुत्रों ने इस रस्म के बारे में पूछा। इस पर गणेशजी ने कहा कि यह धागा नहीं, एक सुरक्षा कवच है। यह रक्षासूत्र आशीर्वाद और भाई-बहन के प्रेम का प्रतीक है।

यह सुनकर शुभ और लाभ ने कहा कि ऐसा है तो हमें भी एक बहन चाहिए। यह सुनकर भगवान गणेश ने अपनी शक्तियों से एक ज्योति उत्पन्न की और उनकी दोनों पत्नियों की आत्मशक्ति के साथ उसे सम्मिलित कर लिया। इस ज्योति ने कन्या का रूप धारण कर लिया और गणेशजी की पुत्री का जन्म हुआ जिसका नाम संतोषी रखा गया। यह पुत्री माता संतोषी के नाम से विख्यात है। हमें यह कथा अलग अलग पुराणों में भिन्न प्रकार की मिलती है।
According to a legend, Lord Ganesha was tying Rakshasutra to his aunt. After this, after seeing the transaction of gifts, the sons of Ganesha asked about this ritual. On this, Ganesha said that this is not a thread, it is a protective shield. This Rakshasutra is a symbol of blessings and brotherly love.

Hearing this, Shubh and Labh said that if it is so then we also want a sister. Hearing this, Lord Ganesha created a flame from his powers and merged it with the Atmanshakti of both his wives. This Jyoti took the form of a girl and a daughter of Ganesha was born who was named Santoshi. This daughter is famous by the name of Mata Santoshi. We find this story in different versions in different Puranas.
