Guru Nanak was born into a Hindu Khatri family. From a young age, he showed deep spiritual insight and questioned religious rituals and social norms. He had a contemplative nature and often meditated in solitude, developing a profound connection with the divine.
At the age of 30, Nanak experienced a mystical vision during which he was said to have disappeared for three days and then returned, proclaiming:
"There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim, only one God."
This message laid the foundation for Sikhism β a religion based on oneness of God, equality, and selfless service.
Guru Nanak undertook four major spiritual journeys (Udasis) across India, the Middle East, and Tibet over 20+ years, spreading messages of truth, unity, compassion, and devotion.
He visited:
Mecca and Medina (Islamic holy places)
Haridwar, Varanasi, Kurukshetra (Hindu pilgrimage sites)
Tibet, Sri Lanka, Assam, and Baghdad
Ik Onkar β One universal, formless God
Naam Japna β Meditate on God's name
Kirat Karni β Earn an honest living
Vand Chakna β Share with others
Rejected caste, idol worship, and religious hypocrisy
Emphasized equality of all human beings, including women
Guru Nanakβs teachings are preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs. His hymns (Shabads) form the basis of Sikh liturgy.
Founded the town of Kartarpur, where he spent his final years
Spiritual successor: Guru Angad Dev Ji, second Sikh Guru
His birth anniversary is celebrated as Guru Nanak Gurpurab, one of Sikhismβs most important festivals
